Lack of shade and water is worsening climate impacts at the Tirana Zoo. Minimum survival conditions aren't enough.
As temperatures climb past 38°C, animals at the Tirana Zoo including lions, bears, and a rescued white tiger are struggling to cope. Staff use sprinklers to keep them cool, but young trees offer little shade and Tirana's limited water supply leaves little room for more. Minimum survival conditions aren't enough and that a modern zoo must be built around the biological, social, and behavioral needs of every animal in its care.
